Thank you for considering the opportunity to partner with Sonrise New Directions Society. We are a faith-based transition sober living residence in Prince George, BC, dedicated to assisting men in their recovery from substance abuse. We believe that our role in our city and northern British Columbia is integral and unique. Under the blessing of God, we hope to solidify our current operations and expand our reach.
For the past 10 years, Sonrise has operated a men’s transition home with a capacity of eight residents – and of 2024 Sonrise now has 2 locations with the capacity of 15 residents. These houses provides safe and supportive housing to men who want to move out of addiction and into a productive life, but need to do so in a protected environment. Typically, our men have completed a supportive recovery program elsewhere (for example, in Baldy Hughes, near Prince George).
A number of things set us apart from other services in the city of Prince George. First, we are faith-based. We consciously depend on the power of God, and seek to share the message of His grace in Jesus Christ. At a time when substance abuse is destroying so many lives and relationships, Sonrise offers the wisdom of the Word of God, especially the healing and hope of the gospel. This includes morning devotions, information sessions and Sunday church attendance for all residents.
Second, we depend heavily on the role of Christian mentors – Sonrise is a “ministry of men mentoring men.” We invite mature Christian men to lead Christian Book Studies and Daily Devotions, and to foster genuine relationships. This mentorship is integral for continued recovery, especially to men who have rarely (or never) experienced healthy relationships.
Third, we have experienced genuine success. Many men have made significant progress during their time in Sonrise. This is not to say that every day is a success story – the nature of working with recovering addicts is that there are many ups-and-downs, and sometimes heartbreak. However, we have seen many positive outcomes in an area where this is rare. We believe in the power of Jesus, and have seen it at work. Finally, we receive no government funding of any kind. This allows us to maintain our identity without any strings attached. It is our intent to continue this model into the future.
The Sonrise board is comprised of volunteers who are limited in their ability to give their daily time and be on-site in the ways that are needed. At this time, we have hired a full-time employee to administer, strengthen and also work towards the expansion of Sonrise into a multi-faceted Christian addiction recovery program. For example, we could see ourselves pursuing a model like Freedom’s Door in Kelowna, or even Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver. The need in Prince George and the northern half of British Columbia is immense and the door seems wide open to bring the great hope of Jesus into this void.
